The annual Gasparilla pirate festival comes to Tampa soon! I had never even heard of until I moved to Tampa. I was invited to visit with new friends, and they said it was like Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Was very interesting to say the least! There were floats (mainly in the form of pirate ships) to walk the streets of the old historic part of beads thrown in Ybor City the crowd, and the firing of pistols. There were food vendors on the side, small shops, and just a ton of people! It is said that more 400,000 people attend.
It is about the legendary Jose Gaspar who was said to be a Spanish pirate who operated in south-west Florida. It was first celebrated in 1904 on horseback. In the parade, "the crew" all dressed in pirate costume and daughter, arrived on a bearing of 165 'long pirate ship downtown Tampa. The mayor of the city gives the key to the city for the captain and they then proceed to one the city's main streets, Bayshore Blvd .. These festivities last few weeks!
